Notes

Extracellular polymeric substances are widespread in marine environments. Their adhesive properties promote attachment of microorganisms to surfaces and contribute to the formation and stability of biofilms. EPS also promote aggregation of suspended particles and the formation of flocs and marine snow, thereby influencing the deposition and vertical transport of fine particulate material and organic carbon.
