Definition of Coast protection:
Measures aimed at protecting the coast from erosion and coastline retreat, from damage to coastal settlements and from flooding of the hinterland.
This is the common definition for Coast protection, other definitions can be discussed in the article

Notes

Hard protection structures such as revetments or groynes are often used in practice, but soft interventions such as shore nourishment are gaining in popularity. Hard protection structures shift erosion-sedimentation patterns along the coast and can eventually result in loss of natural coastal protection structures such as beaches and marshes (so-called coastal squeeze[1]). See also the article Nature-based shore protection.
