This article is based on statistics from the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation, which deals with oil pollution from tankers, including combined carriers, FPSOs and barges. Only accidental spills since 1970 of persistent and non-persistent hydrocarbon oil from tankers are included, except those resulting from acts of war. Oil spills from other sources, such as production platforms (e.g. Deepwater Horizon) and industrial plants, and oil spills from illegal discharges (e.g. tank washing) are not included.

Accidental tanker spill statistics up to 2023 are shown in the figure below. Large accidental oil spills are marked with red bars. The volume of accidental spills has decreased significantly over the past three decades, with the vast majority of spills being less than 7 tonnes.
