The Bucharest Convention (also called the Convention on the Protection of the Black Sea against Pollution) was signed by six Black Sea countries in Bucharest on 21 April 1992 and entered into force on 15 January 1994. The implementation is managed by the Commission for the Protection of the Black Sea Against Pollution (Istanbul Commission).

Aims and objectives

The Convention obliges the the Contracting Parties to prevent, reduce and control the pollution in the Black Sea in order to protect and preserve the marine environment, marine biodiversity and the marine living resources. The pollution can have several causes such as pollution by hazardous substances, land-based sources, vessels, dumping and exploration and exploitation of natural resources.
