Bioindicator

Definition of bioindicator:
1) species characteristic of climate, soil and other conditions in a particular region or habitat. 2) species whose disappearance or disturbance gives early warning of the degradation of an ecosystem.
An insulating layer of fat between skin and muscle layer in aquatic mammals such as whales and seals.[1]
