Total length (TL)

Total length (TL): Total length (TL) refers to the length of a fish measured from the tip of the snout to the tip of the longer lobe of the caudal fin, usually measured with the lobes compressed along the midline. It is a straight-line measure, not measured over the curve of the body.

Total length measurements are used in slot limit and minimum landing size regulations.

Standard length (SL) can be specified as:
  • Maximum length: Size (in cm) of the largest male/unsexed or female specimen ever caught.
  • Common length: Size (in cm) at which male/unsexed or female specimen(s) are commonly caught or marketed.
