AQUAFIMA – Integrating Aquaculture and Fisheries Management towards a sustainable regional development of the Baltic Sea Region

AQUAFIMA deals with integrated fisheries management and aquaculture in the Baltic Sea region. The project addresses the need for an overarching strategy for the development of marine aquaculture in the Baltic Sea Region, combining sectoral policies and environmental issues. Based on the analysis of the current situation, alternative sustainable ecosystem-friendly approaches such as a local-based fisheries management will be discussed with local stakeholders. Within the project, recommendations for the whole Baltic Sea region will be developed. Furthermore, emphasis is on the evaluation of stock saving and restocking measures for individual fish-species as well as on a strategy to integrate marine aquaculture into regional development.

Far-reaching education measures will be implemented to embed the project-bound results in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. 12 partners from 7 countries participate in the project, which is coordinated by the German Landgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mbH. 21 associated organizations accompany AQUAFIMA.

AQUAFIMA is financed by the EU Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013
