Definition of biomagnification:
Biomagnification is bioaccumulation through ingestion of prey items. It causes contaminant concentration to increase with increasing trophic level. Because of biomagnification low trofic level species (like phytoplancton) have a lower contaminent concentration than high trophic level species (like birds).
