Significant wave height
In contrast to in situ sensors, the wave spectra determined from radar images are not properly scaled. Thus, the total wave energy and the significant wave height cannot be computed directly from these spectral estimates. It has been shown that the significant wave height is linearly dependent on the square root of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), where the signal is assumed as the total energy of the wave spectrum estimation derived by the sea clutter analysis mentioned above and the noise is computed as the energy due to the speckle caused by the sea surface roughness (Alpers and Hasselman, 1982[7]). They are defined as the location of the energy maximum within the spectrum. This method is recommended by IAHR/ AIRH because of its high stability with respect to theoretical spectral variability. The wave period can also be derived by the spectral moments obtained over the full range of frequencies.
