Definition of Phytoplankton:
Photosynthesizing microscopic biotic organisms which float or swim weakly in fresh or salt water bodies. Phytoplankton are extremely diverse, varying from photosynthesising bacteria (cyanobacteria), to plant-like diatoms, to armour-plated coccolithophores
