Definition of Allele:
One of several alternate forms of a gene that occurs at the same relative position (locus) on homologous chromosomes.
This is the common definition for Allele, other definitions can be discussed in the article

Notes
Alleles are copies of genes with some modification that change the phenotype in some way. They are detected when the differences in phenotype can be detected.[2]
